Micro pigs may be the £700 accessory du jour for celebrities including Victoria and David Beckham, but there is a catch: they may not remain micro. An advertisement from a leading breeder has been banned after experts queried a claim that the pigs would not grow beyond pint-size.

The complaints centred on advertising claims by the Cambridgeshire-based Little Pig Farm, a purveyor of pampered micro pigs billed as getting "a big cuddle each and every day", with Classic FM piped through to their bedrooms.

THIEVES stole a litter of one-week-old piglets from a farm and are now suspected of running a scam to sell them as pets.

The eleven piglets were snatched from beside their mother at Segment Farm on Pennington Lane, Earlestown.

They battered the sow with wooden sticks and it is believed they may have returned to the farm several times to gather all the piglets.

Owner Arthur Bevan, a butcher, believes many of the piglets will have died but there have been reports some are being offered for sale as pets in parts of St Helens.

It is feared crooks have been trying to pass off the piglets as ‘micro pigs’. These are trendy teacup sized pets favoured by some celebrities which sell for about £700.

Arthur, 60, from Burtonwood and a part owner in Pimmies Pies, said: “It is cruel and despicable to take them away from their mother when they are so young.

“They are most probably dead but we’ve heard reports some are being offered for sale in Parr by people falsely claiming they are micro pigs (which do not grow and are kept bigger) and trying to sell them for £100 each.

“But these pigs would grow up to weigh a third of a tonne, they are bred for meat. I would be lucky to get £20 for them even when they are six weeks old and feeding properly.

Alex Reid To Go Veggie For Pet Pig

Alex Reid is considering becoming a vegetarian after he and wife Katie Price were given a pet pig who he has fallen in love with.

Alex Reid is going to become a vegetarian for his pet pig.

The cage-fighter is so smitten with his new micro-pig Bingle - who was given to him and Katie Price as a gift at their recent wedding blessing - he is considering giving up meat because he now feels "guilty" eating it.

He explained: "I am very attached to Bingle and have even given up eating pork because it was making me feel so guilty.

"I might even go the whole hog and turn vegetarian. Ha ha!

"Bingle has made me appreciate pigs more - they are so intelligent.

"Two of our friends bought him for us as a wedding present - they are the trendy thing to own now."

Although Alex says Bingle has settled into the household well, he admits Katie is jealous of the attention he gets from the sweet swine.

Does a micro pig make a good pet?

Micro pigs are the latest celebrity accessory, owned by everyone from Rupert Grint to Katie Price.

As the name suggests they are miniature pigs that can be trained like a dog and kept in the house as a pet.

Michelle Cameron is a micro pig breeder from Thame. She sells her pigs for anything from £100 to £250.

"They are around knee high but obviously they can get to a fair old size," she said. "At the end of the day they are still pigs."

'Great pets'

In a statement to BBC Oxford the RSPCA said: "Owning and caring for a pig requires a great deal of commitment, time, skill, money, sufficient space to house the animal, specialist veterinary care when necessary and compliance with the many laws governing the keeping and transport of pigs."

Anyone wishing to keep a pig must have a CPH number.

The RSPCA states that owning a pig requires a great deal of commitment

It stands for 'County Parish Holding' and is needed in case of disease outbreak so that the authorities can track the pigs.

But despite these drawbacks Ms Cameron says that they make great pets.
